You may have heard some rumors floating around about these ‘escape rooms’ lately. But what’s the truth? Everyone wants to be prepared for their escape room experience, so we’ve collected seven common myths and broken them down to manage misconceptions. MYTH: Someone is watching and listening the whole time.

It might sound creepy, but game masters are watching and listening to you while you’re in the escape room. We aren’t spying or laughing at you, just making sure you’re being safe, everything is working correctly, and we’re giving the most accurate clues we can to help when you’re stuck. 

MYTH: It’s bad to ask for clues. 

FALSE

The truth is escape rooms are all about having fun! If you’re stuck on a clue and getting frustrated, game masters are happy to help! Escape rooms can be tricky with all kinds of different puzzles, so there’s no shame in needing a nudge here or there. Some escape rooms may have a limit on how many clues you can ask for, so be sure to know the clue policy beforehand. At Escape From St. Louis, you will always have UNLIMITED clues! 

MYTH: You’re locked in. 

FALSE

The door closes behind you, and you’re trapped. This is one of the biggest fears I’ve seen people have about escape rooms. Thankfully, this is not the case. At Escape From St. Louis, the entry door to the room is always unlocked. You can step out whenever you need and join back in, but the clock will keep ticking. 

MYTH: The themes of the rooms will change over time. 

TRUE

Just because you’ve played all the rooms at one place, doesn’t mean you should cross them off and unfollow! Many escape rooms switch out old rooms for completely new ones over time. At Escape From St. Louis, we have a new room opening later this year, so definitely be on the look out!

MYTH: I don’t need outside knowledge to solve the puzzles.

If you’re panicking trying to remember sign language or binary code, take a look around. There should be a code sheet or example somewhere in the room. Most rooms don’t require outside knowledge to solve any puzzles.

MYTH: All escape rooms are scary!

FALSE

This goes out to all the players who have a few rooms under their belt. It’s true that you may start to get the hang of finding patterns and unlocking locks after playing rooms, but beware! Escape room companies are all different. Always listen to the intros and approach each room with an open mind! Anything is possible.
